Updates from September meeting

• North Parking Lot—new signs have arrived
• No visitor parking at all during pickup and drop-off
• Special safety concern regarding entering the bus lane
• Fencing
  • Matt Wilford from the district facilities came to review
  • He believes we have the go-ahead for the work order
  • Will ensure it’s not a fire hazard (nobody can be locked in)

Plans

• Safe Walking Routes Plan
  • Plan is due Nov. 1
  • Complete, submit, and sign the proposed plan (including SCC chair and PTA rep)
  • Review of where neighborhood streets do and do not have sidewalks—a few areas with no sidewalks and some with large speed bumps
  • Worth pursuing with UDOT to see if they can spend any budget on adding sidewalks? Ms. Edwards going to speak with friend at UDOT
  • Options for compromise: speed bumps, no parking during walking hours signs
  • Maybe add a sign near the bus lane emphasizing it’s for buses only
  • Other elements of safe walking plan as suggested by Principal Winder—the SCC agrees
• Playground/grounds needs
  • Regarding dogs on campus, we can currently enforce that dogs need to be on-leash if kids are on campus (8:25–3:40) and must be cleaned up after
  • Dogs are never supposed to be off-leash
  • Request: extra trash can by playground
  • Request: another bench near the playground
• School Safety Plan
  • #1 safety concern at school: Closed gates (including fencing and signage) around playground—both to keep people out during school hours and to keep children safely inside
  • Other safety concerns at school
    • Signage regarding no trespassing during school hours
    • Light-up stop signs for crossing guard
    • Arrival and dismissal processes
    • Rooms within school that don’t have badge access—students accessing them inappropriately. Consider push-code locks?
    • Monitoring of student behavior at school, including through new cameras
  • Review/celebration of successful installation of HAWK light

• Fall Acadience testing
  • School composite score for reading: 58.5
  • School composite score for math: 54
  • Kinder and 1st—lots of emphasis on phonics instruction, so we’re optimistic for growth there
  • 4th grade has faced a lot of obstacles, but looking forward to permanent return of Mrs. Robinson
• School RISE data
  • Language arts: in line with the state, slightly below the district
  • Math: above the state, slightly below the district
  • Science: a little lower than state and district averages
    • Tests only 5th and 4th, and it’s new for our school to teach and test those—hopeful that it will improve
  • One suggestion: inform parents when testing is happening so that they can support kids’ needs and preparation
• Behavior/Attendance
  • Physical and verbal aggression are primary issues
  • Little bit of truancy, threats, disruption
  • 58 referrals to main office (more major incidents) and 30 minor incidents (handled within classroom)
  • Last year, only 33% of students were in the green (on-track) zone for school attendance
  • Currently this year, 76% are on-track for attendance
  • After so many attempts to contact, we are allowed to partner with DCFS to pursue truancy issues
